Ayurvedic massage: how it differs

2nd February 2018 - by Indre Daukintyte

There exist many types of massage techniques and methods, and it might be quite difficult to decide which type would be best for you. Nearly each country or area in the world has its own style of massage therapy.

We will pinpoint the “Hows” and “Whys” a little better for those who are yet to sample the pure delights of Ayurvedic massage.

Developed more than 3,000 years ago in India, Ayurvedic medicine is one of the world’s oldest holistic healing systems.

According to Ayurvedic beliefs, our wellness and health are very much linked to the state of balance. between our body, mind, and spirit. Ayurveda aims at promoting good health and preventing, rather than fighting disease.

However, there are treatments that can target specific health concerns and issues.

So what makes Ayurvedic therapy so special?

Movements

The Ayurvedic massage strokes vary from deep, to superficial and follow the flow of energy channels, nerve pathways, and hair growth. There are three types of movements – active (strong pressure), passive (delicate stroking) and persuasive (pinching or kneading the small muscles with the thumb and forefinger).

Chakras

According to Ayurveda, each of the 7 chakras nourishes particular organs and controls various psycho-physiological aspects of our being. When they are blocked, physical disease ensues. Ayurvedic oil massage opens and cleanses these energy channels so the current can flow freely, and latent vitality is released.

Music

During an Ayurvedic massage, music is very uplifting and adds a meditative aspect to the experience.

Aromatherapy

The smell during a massage experience induces a positive state. Smell is the only sense with a direct link to the limbic, or emotional centre of the brain. Therefore, during an Ayurvedic massage, this gives aromas the power to evoke vivid impressions, conjure up memories, and trigger emotions.

Ayurvedic oils and treatments are safe to use for all ages, are free from side effects, are hypo-allergenic, and non-habit forming.

At our spas, you can choose a treatment from a wide range of Ayurveda therapies performed by our professionals.
